UK energy industries currently contribute about 6.0% to GDP. With around 38% of all industrial investment currently made by the energy industries, investment per head during 2007 was 8 times higher than that made in the production industries.

The UK is now the biggest national generator of offshore wind energy in the world, with average growth of 23% over the last 10 years. In 2007, generation from wind power was 4 times the amount generated in 2003.

The capacity for electricity generation from renewable sources other than hydro is 30 times its level in 1990 and has doubled in the last 4 years.

Renewables is becoming more important with technology investment still high and growing within biofuels, wave, solar photovoltaics, onshore/offshore wind and small scale and re-furbished hydro.

As the world outlook on Fuel and Energy changes, so does the need for qualified individuals who can be at the forefront of this new technology.
